Moon Over the Dunes: Capturing Saudi Arabia's Desert Supermoon

A full moon rising over the sand dunes of Saudi Arabia is one of the most awe-inspiring sights I have ever photographed. The moon climbs slowly above the eastern horizon, enormous and golden, casting long silver shadows across dune ridges that by day are harshly bright. This is the nightscape that drew me deeper into desert photography, and with the right preparation, it is a moment you can capture reliably every month.

Planning the Perfect Desert Moon Shot

Moon photography in the desert requires careful planning. I use PhotoPills and The Photographer's Ephemeris to calculate exactly where and when the full moon will rise relative to my chosen dune formations. The sweet spot is the 15 to 30 minutes after moonrise, when the moon still sits low enough to appear dramatically large but the sky retains enough warm twilight colour to create a rich, layered background. On a supermoon evening, this golden window is absolutely extraordinary.

Camera Settings for Moon and Desert Landscape

Balancing a bright moon with the darker foreground dunes is the central challenge of this type of photography. I typically use a telephoto lens — 200mm to 400mm — to compress the scene and make the moon appear larger relative to the dunes. For the initial moonrise during blue hour, I can still expose for both: around ISO 400, f/8, 1/30 second. As darkness deepens, I shift to two exposures — one for the moon (fast shutter to avoid motion blur) and one for the foreground (longer exposure), then blend them in post.

The Colour of the Desert Moon

One of the unexpected gifts of photographing the moon over the Arabian desert is the extraordinary colour it takes on near the horizon. The same dust particles that create dramatic sunsets also filter moonlight through a warm amber lens as it rises. In January, I captured what I can only describe as a golden moon — a deep, burnished gold disc sitting precisely above the curved ridgeline of a dune, its reflection shimmering in the soft, wind-combed sand below. It is an image that took months of planning but a lifetime to remember.

The desert of Saudi Arabia is a celestial theatre unlike any other. If you have ever wanted to try moon photography, the open skies, minimal light pollution, and dramatic terrain of the Arabian Peninsula make it one of the finest locations on earth. Come prepared, arrive early, and stay until the last light fades — the desert rewards patience.
