Riyadh: A Photographer's Base for the Saudi Landscape

Riyadh sits at the heart of one of the most photographically rich landscapes on the planet. Within a two-hour radius of the capital, you can reach towering escarpments, ancient lava fields, rolling dunes, palm oases, abandoned mud cities, and rock formations that look like they belong on another planet. This guide covers the ten locations I return to most consistently as a professional desert photographer based in Riyadh — each one reachable for a day trip, each one capable of producing images that stop a viewer in their tracks.

1. Jebel Fihrayn (Edge of the World) — 75 km NW

The Tuwaiq Escarpment at its most dramatic. A 300-metre cliff plunging into an ancient valley. Best at sunset when the limestone strata glow amber. Read our complete Edge of the World photography guide for full details.

2. Thumamah National Park — 60 km N

Accessible desert with good sand dunes, wildlife including Arabian wolves and sand gazelles, and a growing infrastructure of camping areas. Good for sunset and golden hour dune photography without a multi-hour drive. Best location for beginners building their desert photography skills.

3. Diriyah Old Town — 20 km NW

The UNESCO World Heritage mud-brick capital of the first Saudi state. The At-Turaif district is one of the finest examples of Najdi architecture in existence. Best photographed at golden hour when the warm light unifies the honey-coloured earthen walls and the deep shadows articulate every carved detail.

4. Wadi Hanifa — Within Greater Riyadh

The green valley running through Riyadh is a surprising photographic subject. Date palms line the watercourse, traditional farms nestle against the escarpment walls, and the contrast between the verdant valley floor and the dry plateau above provides a visual story about water and survival in the desert.

5. Jabal Tuwaiq — 80–120 km S

The southern extension of the Tuwaiq Escarpment offers accessible cliff-edge viewpoints with fewer visitors than Jebel Fihrayn. Long linear compositions following the cliff edge to the horizon are possible here in clear conditions. The plateau approach road itself is lined with rocky desert that rewards a walking scout.

6–10. Hawtah, Al Qassim Dunes, Rawdat Khuraim, Tharmada, and the Al Arid Mountains

Hawtah south of Riyadh offers date palm oases and traditional Najdi villages. The Al Qassim region two hours north has expansive dune fields excellent for sunrise work. Rawdat Khuraim is a protected area of exceptional desert wildflower blooms in wet seasons. Tharmada northwest has classic desert plateau landscapes. The Al Arid mountains immediately north and west of Riyadh provide accessible rocky highland terrain with panoramic views over the capital.
