Why Saudi Arabia is One of the World's Best Milky Way Destinations
Saudi Arabia's vast, underpopulated interior offers some of the darkest skies accessible from any major city on the planet. The combination of minimal light pollution, low humidity, and dry clear air — particularly in autumn and winter months — creates conditions for Milky Way photography that photographers in Europe or North America simply cannot access without transcontinental travel. From Riyadh, a 90-minute drive in almost any direction brings you to Bortle Class 3 or 4 skies. In the deep desert, Bortle Class 2 conditions are reachable, where the Milky Way casts a faint shadow on a white sheet. For a desert photographer working in the Kingdom, night sky photography is one of the most powerful and underexplored creative opportunities.
Best Locations Near Riyadh for Milky Way Photography
The most accessible dark sky locations from Riyadh are northeast and northwest of the city, away from the Dammam and Mecca highway corridors which carry significant light pollution. Jebel Fihrayn combines dramatic foreground geology with excellent dark skies. The Al Aflaj region to the south offers flat open desert under genuinely dark skies. The area around the Thumamah National Park at 60–80km from the city provides a reasonable compromise between accessibility and darkness for shorter sessions. For serious astrophotography, a pre-new moon weekend in the Empty Quarter delivers conditions that are among the best in the world.

Camera Settings for Milky Way Photography
For Milky Way core photography, use the following as a baseline: ISO 3200–6400 depending on your camera's high-ISO performance. Aperture as wide as your lens allows — f/1.8 or f/2.8 are ideal; the extra stop compared to f/4 doubles your light collection. Shutter speed calculated using the 500 Rule — divide 500 by your focal length in millimetres. On a 24mm lens this gives approximately 20 seconds before stars trail. On a full-frame body at 14mm you can extend to around 35 seconds. Focus manually to infinity, then pull back slightly — lenses rarely focus stars at their hard infinity stop. Use a remote shutter release to eliminate vibration.
Desert Foreground Composition with the Milky Way
The Milky Way alone is rarely enough for a compelling image. The Saudi desert provides exceptional foreground elements that elevate night sky photographs from technical exercises to genuine art: dune ridges catching the faint skylight create S-curves into the galactic core; isolated rock formations silhouetted against the stars echo the geological age of the universe above; a single tent or vehicle provides human scale and warmth that grounds the cosmic vastness of the sky. Scout your foreground in daylight and visualise the arc of the Milky Way across it using the PhotoPills app.
